Great experience! I bought my ukulele 5 years ago but after trying online I packed it away and then…strum squad happened! Now I have plenty of tools and I feel confident that I can keep up with my 5 minutes minimum of practice. We learned several strumming patterns including the island strum and I’m looking forward to see what my playing will be like after a year. Thanks to Mike and strum squad for kicking off this journey!

Meet your instructor

Lead Instructor: Mike Papaloni

Hey! I'm Mike - musician and founder of Strum Squad!

I've taught over 2000 students how to play the uke in a fun and supportive group environment over the years. You may have even seen me performing as a band or acoustic solo act in your town.

Strum Squad is the program I created to teach my ukulele secrets with a strong focus on FUN and COMMUNITY.

There will be ukulele jams and laughter along the way!

I look forward to strumming with you and your squad!

FAQ

FAQs

How does the Strum Squad Social Ukulele program work? What can I expect?

Strum Squad Social Ukulele is a 6-week, beginner-friendly group ukulele program for adults. We meet once per week for 1 hour (lesson is 40 minutes with 15 minutes of unstructured time before each lesson for questions, tuning, mingling, etc), with a focus on fun, community, and low-pressure learning.

Instead of dry exercises or heavy music theory, we get you strumming real, recognizable songs from day one. You’ll learn simple chords, strumming patterns, and rhythm techniques through upbeat group activities and social, game-style exercises that keep things light and enjoyable.

Every session is built around:

  • Playing popular, feel-good songs as a group

  • Easy skill progression

  • Social interaction and icebreakers

  • A welcoming, community-focused environment

No pressure, no perfection, just good vibes, good music, and great people.

Group sizes range from 12-19 adults, and depending on attendance, we may bring an assistant instructor to support individuals who need 1-on-1 help while keeping the group flowing. No one gets left behind, and everyone learns at their own pace.

You’ll leave each class feeling relaxed, connected, and actually excited to practice - something adults don’t often get in traditional music lessons!

What happens if we miss a lesson?

No stress — life happens.

If you miss a class, you’ll still be able to catch up quickly because all participants receive:

  • A weekly lesson recap email

  • Access to practice videos, including step-by-step breakdowns and strum-along videos of the songs we learn

You can also arrive up to 15 minutes early at the next class to tune up your uke and get a quick refresher or mini catch-up session. We’ll make sure you’re back on track before the lesson begins.

Do I need a musical background/understanding of music to join?

Not at all!

Strum Squad Social Ukulele is designed for absolute beginners, even if you've never played an instrument before.

You’ll learn everything from how to hold the ukulele to your first chords, strum patterns, and full songs, with no pressure and lots of support.

We provide the ukuleles, tuners, and everything you need. Just show up ready to have fun.

What is the minimum/maximum age required to join?

This program is designed for adults.

Classes are social, relaxed, and beginner-friendly, making them perfect for:

  • Adults looking for a fun weekly activity

  • Parents attending without kids

  • Retirees

  • Anyone looking to make friends and pick up a fun, low-stress hobby

If you're 18+, you’re welcome!

Can I attend alone, or should I come with a friend/partner?

You can do either!

A large portion of our participants come solo. It’s a very welcoming and easy-going environment, and you’ll meet people quickly if you are open to chatting with your squad mates before and after lessons. If you're a bit shy and are unsure if this program is right for you, just know that you won't "put on the spot" to perform or do any public speaking against your will.

Social Uke is low-pressure and lighthearted. We'll completely respect your comfort levels and you can certainly be more of a fly on the wall if you'd prefer.

Other squad mates might join as couples, friends, coworkers, etc. What a great way to make memories with your loved ones!

Can I bring my own ukulele? Do I get a discount for bringing my own ukulele instead of renting one?

You can absolutely bring your own ukulele instead of renting!

We include the rentals as a part of the program so it doesn't change the price if you bring your own uke or use ours - we always have a few people in every group who bring their own ukuleles and that's fine by me!

I can't make this session but would like to attend a session in the future when we're available. Can you notify me when Strum Squad returns to our town?

Yes! Please join our Upcoming Programs Waitlist to be notified of upcoming programs near you. See you next time!

How long is each lesson?

Classes are 40 minutes of lesson with a 15 minute buffer time before each lesson for tuning, questions, mingling, etc. - expect to spend an hour total with us each week!

Example for a 7pm time slot:

7-7:15pm: Arrive, tuning ukes, chatting, questions, catch up, etc.

7:15-7:55: lesson

7:55-8: pack up, questions, chat, etc.
